GREEN HILL ZONE

MIKE ALLEN AND TIM BOUCKLEY

GREEN HILL ZONE is the name of the first level in the very first Sonic The Hedgehog video game, released in 1991. This platform game was the first title to be produced by Sega.

Three heated seating islands have been fabricated to provide seating inside a cold warehouse in mid-February. The islands are a series of split-level platforms, the surfaces of which are covered with thin grey carpet. A single speaker hood, modified from a lamp shade, is suspended over each island. Audio plays through these in a synchronized, three channel arrangement: two of the three islands are always 'on', while the remaining island is silent. This combination of audio and silence flicks between one island and the next in a continually rotating system. The sound is relayed through the speakers in a changing programme that works its way through a large collection of spoken-word audio material. Above the islands hangs a lighting system made from an array of low-wattage bulbs hung in festoon style strings, such as those found in pub gardens or outside cafes.
